Frequently Asked Questions
What is a psycho-educational assessment?
A psycho-educational assessment is a comprehensive information gathering process used to identify your child's learning strengths and needs. Data is collected from a variety of sources, including clinical interviews, formal testing, completion of questionnaires, and review of report cards.
A psycho-educational assessment can be helpful in answering questions
such as:
Does my child have a learning disability? (e.g., dyslexia)
How are my child's attention challenges impacting their learning?
Is my child intellectually gifted?
What are my child's unique learning strengths and challenges?
How can I best support my child in their learning?
Would my child benefit from a psycho-educational assessment?
If your child is struggling to succeed in the 'typical' classroom environment, a psycho-educational assessment can be helpful. An undiagnosed learning disability, difficulties with fine motor coordination, attention challenges or anxiety, can all interfere with your child's ability to experience success in their home, school and social environments. Alternatively, your child may be intellectually gifted, and would benefit from additional enrichment in their academic programming.
Will an assessment result in a formal diagnosis for my child?
A psycho-educational and/or attention assessment may result in a formal diagnosis (e.g., learning disability, giftedness, ADHD). However, if your child does not meet criteria for a diagnosis, recommendations to optimize their functioning in their home and school environments are still provided.
Do I have to share the results with my child's school?
Parents have a choice about how much information they will share with the school. However, as this information is often very useful when programming for your child, parents are encouraged to share the report and recommendations with the school.
How long does an assessment take to complete?
An assessment is typically completed within 4-6 weeks of the initial parent meeting.
How much does an assessment cost?
The total cost of a psycho-educational assessment is $220/hour for a total of 12.5 hours ($2750)
Please refer to the services & fees tab for more information regarding what is included in a psycho-educational assessment.
Will my insurance benefits cover the cost of an assessment?
Many insurance providers provide coverage for "psychological services", which can include counselling and/or psycho-educational assessments. However, as plans differ in what they cover, clients are encouraged to contact their insurance provider prior to starting the assessment process, as coverage is not guaranteed.
Note: any amount not covered by insurance can be claimed as an expense on your annual tax return.
I have no insurance coverage for psychological services. What are my options?
If your family does not have any insurance coverage for psychological services, I am happy to discuss a reduced rate for services.
Can you direct bill to my insurance provider?
Yes, I am able to offer direct billing to most insurance companies. If I am unable to direct bill to your insurance provider, I will provide you with a detailed receipt to submit to insurance for reimbursement.
